Add Page Numbers

Add Page Numbers to PDF inserts printed numbers onto your pages in any of nine positions, using either plain digits or a custom format such as Page {n} of {total}.

About Add Page Numbers

Numbered pages matter the moment a document leaves your screen. Court bundles, tender submissions, university theses and printed handbooks all need a reliable way to say which sheet you are looking at. Merging several files usually destroys whatever numbering the originals had, so numbering is best applied last, once the final page order is settled and no further sections will be inserted.

Choose one of nine positions across the top and bottom of the page, set the starting number, and skip a cover page if you have one. The format field takes literal text alongside the placeholders, so Page {n} of {total} prints exactly that. Watch for documents with existing footers: numbers are drawn on top of the page, so pick a corner that is genuinely empty rather than one holding a footer line.

How to add page numbers

  1. Upload the PDF you want to number, or drag it onto the page.
  2. Pick a position, starting number, first page to number and text format.
  3. Click the add numbers button and let the file process.
  4. Download the numbered PDF and check the first and last pages.

Why use this tool

Nine positions

Place numbers in any corner, or centred at the top or bottom, so they sit clear of existing headers, footers and binding margins.

Custom formats

Use plain digits or a template such as Page 1 of 20, mixing your own wording with the current page and total placeholders.

Flexible start

Begin numbering at any value and skip covers or title pages, which keeps printed numbers matching a contents list or bundle index.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start numbering from a page other than the first?
Yes. Tell the tool which page should receive the first number and what that number should be. This is how you skip a cover and a contents page, then have the body start at 1, or continue a sequence that began in a separate volume.
Can I write Page 1 of 20 instead of a bare number?
Yes. The format field accepts your own wording plus placeholders for the current page and the document total, so Page {n} of {total} prints as Page 1 of 20. Any surrounding text you type, such as a section name or a case reference, is printed literally.
Will the numbers overlap my existing footers?
They can, because numbers are drawn as a new layer over the finished page. There is no automatic collision detection. Look at a page with a footer first, then choose a position that is clear of it, or number the opposite corner instead.
Can I remove page numbers afterwards?
Not with this tool. Once stamped, the numbers are part of the page content. Keep your unnumbered original, which is good practice anyway, and re-run the tool if you later change the page order. Numbering is normally the final step before distribution.
Does this work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. Numbers are drawn onto the page regardless of whether the page holds real text or a scanned image, so scans number just as well as digital documents. The scan itself is not altered, and the tool does not need to read any text to place numbers.
